A national program that pays for mammograms and Pap smears for uninsured women reopens today in Michigan after the state ran out of money and had to postpone test for several dozen women until now.
There's also a new local program to compliment the National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program, should it run out of money again.
Call The Pink Door, it "aims to help uninsured and underserved women get mammograms with no waits or worries" says Julie Durham who set up the program. It went online last week at www.shoppinkdoor.com.
Products with the organization's Pink Door logo, as well as money from advertisers on the site, will pay for the mammograms, said Durham, mammography coordinator at Botsford General Hospital in Farmington Hills. In August, the national program was put on hold in Michigan when funds ran out. Nationwide, the program services only 13% of 3.3 million women who are qualified for it, because funds are limited...
